How to Keep Hope in Difficult Times | Joshua 14:6-15 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If the last stretch of life has left you tired of waiting and unsure anything will change, this sermon is about how to keep hope in difficult times. Caleb held on to God's promise for 45 years and still asked for his mountain at 85. Hope stays alive when you stand by what God said, wait on him, speak his plan out loud and then do the work to take it. In this sermon, preached in 2021, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Joshua 14:6-15 and shows four things Caleb had that kept his hope alive. Questions this sermon answers How do you keep hope when you feel stuck or started late? Pastor Smith says God's calling is not bound by your age or a late start, and Caleb is the proof. Why does God make us wait? Putting someone in place too quickly microwaves their character, so the wait builds the person God needs you to be. What do you do when nobody agrees with you? Like Caleb and Joshua against the ten spies, sometimes you stand alone on what God said, and you don't have to answer every critic. Why doesn't God just hand us the promise? The promised land still had to be conquered, and fighting for it is how God grows you so you value what he gives. Scripture: Joshua 14:6-15 Chapters 0:00 Keeping hope in difficult times 0:31 Joshua 14:6-15 reading and prayer 3:41 Lessons from a 106-year-old life 12:31 Standing alone with character 17:12 Patience to wait on God 21:52 Courage to declare God's plan 28:12 Fighting for the promise Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #KeepHopeAlive #Joshua14

There's More to Life Than Surviving | John 5:1-9 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Maybe you made it through a hard year and you are still carrying the weight of it, wondering if Jesus heals people like that today. Pastor Kaloma Smith says surviving gets you through, but Jesus wants to heal you. His grace meets you where you are, even on your couch, and it reaches the things you have carried for decades. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on John 5:1-9 and shows how a man sick for 38 years at the pool of Bethesda almost missed his healing because his picture of God was too small. Questions this sermon answers How does Jesus heal today? He meets you where you are, without waiting for you to reach the right building or the front row, and tells you to get up. What happened at the pool of Bethesda? Jesus found a man who had been sick for 38 years, asked if he wanted to be healed, and told him to pick up his mat and walk. When You Need a New Season | Joel 2:23-28 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

The job, the friendships, the family or the bank account that used to fill you up has slowly gone dry, and spiritual dryness has set in before you noticed. Pastor Kaloma Smith says God sends rain after a long drought, but between the rain and the harvest you have to do the work. Walk toward what God is doing, and trust him to restore the years you lost, starting with the things money can't buy. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Joel 2:23-28 and shows that God's promise of a new season reaches everyone, sons and daughters, old and young. Questions this sermon answers How do you get through spiritual dryness? Keep walking toward God's rain instead of turning away from it, because faith is belief and faith is also action. What is a dry season in life? It is dryness that builds slowly in your work, family, friendships or money until one day you wake up and wonder why you are not happy. How to Praise God in a Hard Season | Romans 16:25-27 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Maybe this Christmas you can't see family, or the job isn't there, and you wonder how to praise God after a year this hard. You praise God after a hard year by fixing your eyes on who God is instead of what the holiday gives you. Romans 16:25-27 points to a God with power to strengthen you and a promise made known to every person. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Romans 16:25-27, the burst of praise that closes Paul's letter, and shows on Christmas Sunday 2020 why this year the praise is different. Questions this sermon answers How do you praise God in hard times? Look past the gifts and the dinner to the God who is able to strengthen you, the same God who sent Jesus to lift all of us. Who is God's promise for? It is for everyone, because Paul says the mystery kept secret for ages has now been made known to all nations, so God's promises include you right where you are. Scripture: Romans 16:25-27 Chapters 0:00 Reading Romans 16:25-27 0:53 Prayer 1:47 Why this praise is different 5:55 More than gifts 8:56 God's power to strengthen you 16:02 God's promise for everyone 21:19 The only wise God Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #PraiseGod #Romans16

Don't Lose Hope When Your Heart Is Broken | Isaiah 61 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

When the holidays don't look like they used to and your heart feels broken, don't lose hope. Jesus was anointed to bind up the brokenhearted and set captives free, and that mission is still at work today. God may not fix every situation right away, but he comes close and holds your heart together. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Isaiah 61:1-4 and shows why the promise Jesus read in the synagogue still speaks to people who are lonely or grieving. Preached in December 2020, during Advent. Questions this sermon answers What does it mean that God binds up the brokenhearted? God gets close enough to wrap your broken heart and hold it together, even before the situation changes. Why did Jesus read Isaiah 61? He chose it to announce his public ministry because it names his mission to the brokenhearted and the captive. What does a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit mean? God asks us to change how we talk and start praising, so our words follow what he is doing. How do I keep hope when life feels hopeless? Remember that the Savior who was born still speaks to your situation and builds up what was ruined. Scripture: Isaiah 61:1-4; Luke 4:16-21 Chapters 0:00 Isaiah 61:1-4 reading and prayer 1:37 When holiday traditions change 4:40 Who was the prophet Isaiah? 8:00 Why Jesus was anointed: good news to the poor 11:55 God binds up the brokenhearted 15:04 Liberty to the captives 19:30 A garment of praise instead of ashes Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #DontLoseHope #Isaiah61

Who Can I Run To When I'm Overwhelmed? | 1 Samuel 19:18 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Feeling overwhelmed by the news, the job or everything at once? Most of us grab our phones first. When everything you lean on comes up empty, run to God first and tell him all of it: your sin, and your anxiety and loneliness too. Then stay with him and wait, because God often gives a God answer instead of the Google answer we want. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on 1 Samuel 19:18 and shows how David, with King Saul trying to kill him, ran to the prophet Samuel, told him everything and stayed. It was preached in fall 2020 as part of the Dreaming in Dark Places series. Questions this sermon answers How do you stop feeling overwhelmed? Run to God before you run to your phone, the news or a politician, and bring him the whole situation. How do you stop feeling overwhelmed and anxious? Be fully honest with God about your anxiety, loneliness and pain, because he wants to carry those too and not only your sin. Why am I feeling overwhelmed all the time? Often we keep running to things that cannot carry the weight, like screens, cable news and politicians. How do you stop feeling overwhelmed by politics? Stop doom scrolling and stop waiting for a politician or a TV host to give you peace, and take that worry to God instead. Scripture: 1 Samuel 19:18 Chapters 0:00 Dreaming in dark places 0:33 The life of David 1:42 Who can I run to when I'm overwhelmed? 5:22 What we run to instead 10:35 David runs to God first 16:03 Tell God everything 21:16 Why God makes you wait Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #FeelingOverwhelmed #1Samuel19

How to Find True Friends | 1 Samuel 18:1-5 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

You can have hundreds of followers and still not know who to call when life falls apart, so this sermon asks how to find true friends. Jonathan and David came from different worlds but shared the same values, made a covenant and then protected and backed each other. Pastor Smith says you don't need a crowd, just one or two godly friends who push you higher. In this sermon, preached in 2020 during a series on the life of David, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on 1 Samuel 18:1-5 and shows four marks of a real friendship. Questions this sermon answers How do you find true friends? Look for shared values instead of shared status, because Jonathan and David had little in common except what they stood for. What is a covenant friendship? A friendship between equals where both people invest in each other, not one where you always do the chasing or only hear their problems. What do real friends do for you? Like Jonathan giving David his robe, sword, bow and belt, they protect you, fight for your opportunities and support your dreams. Why do the friends around you matter for success? After Jonathan's friendship, David succeeded wherever Saul sent him, and the right people push you higher instead of keeping you comfortable. Scripture: 1 Samuel 18:1-5 Chapters 0:00 The people around you matter 1:10 1 Samuel 18: Jonathan and David 2:50 That's What Friends Are For 5:44 What friendship really means today 8:49 Common bonds and covenant friendship 18:18 Friends who protect, fight and support 24:15 The right friends lift your success Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #TrueFriendship #1Samuel18

How to Handle Pressure as a Christian | Acts 12:1-5 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If you are juggling work and kids at home or worried about money, here is how to handle pressure. When the early church lost James and saw Peter thrown in prison, they stayed put and prayed earnestly for him. Stand your ground instead of running, and treat prayer as real power instead of a sympathy card. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Acts 12:1-5 and shows how the early church faced Herod's attack. Preached in August 2020, about six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, as Part 1 of The Proper Response to Pressure. Questions this sermon answers What did the early church do when Peter was arrested? It did not scatter as it had after Stephen died, and earnest prayer for Peter was made to God by the church. Am I praying for something God has let die? Sometimes we keep praying over a dead relationship or a dead-end job when God is pointing us toward what comes next. Why doesn't thoughts and prayers feel like enough? Because we have shrunk prayer down to a thought, when it is real communication with the God who made heaven and earth. How should Christians respond to pressure? Stand your ground, discern what God wants you to focus on and pray earnestly. Scripture: Acts 12:1-5 Chapters 0:00 Opening prayer 0:32 Supporting the ministry 1:30 Why the book of Acts for hard times 2:18 Pressure on families, jobs and churches in 2020 8:55 Three ways to respond to pressure: stand 13:51 Discern: stop praying over dead things 20:01 Pray: more than thoughts and prayers Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #HowToHandlePressure #Acts12

How to Have Courage in Hard Times | Acts 9:10-19 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If a layoff, a career that no longer fits or a hard conversation has you scared to take the next step, this sermon is about how to have courage in hard times. God sent Ananias to pray for Saul, the man who had come to Damascus to arrest believers, and Ananias went. Pastor Smith says courage comes from confirming what God has told you and then stepping out, even when the evidence in front of you doesn't match what God has said. In this sermon, preached in 2020 during the first months of shelter-in-place, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Acts 9:10-19 and shows how one ordinary disciple's courage changed history. Questions this sermon answers How do you find courage to step into the unknown? Bring your questions to God, let him confirm the next step, then go, the way Ananias questioned God and still obeyed. What if the facts don't line up with what God told me? Pastor Smith says believers live by the reality God has spoken even when the evidence around them says otherwise. Do I need a title or position to make a difference? No. Ananias had no position, yet God used him to heal Saul, who became the apostle Paul. Who was Ananias in Acts 9? A disciple in Damascus whom God sent to lay hands on the blinded Saul so he could see again. Scripture: Acts 9:10-19 Chapters 0:00 Courage for difficult situations 2:36 8 Mile and the fear of one shot 5:57 Rethinking your future in a hard season 8:34 Ananias and Saul in Acts 9 13:00 When the evidence doesn't match God's word 23:08 Courage changes your life and others Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #Courage #Acts9

Where Does My Help Come From? | Psalm 121 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

When your routine gets rearranged and the news changes every day, you end up asking the question Psalm 121 asks: where does my help come from? Your help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth, and he keeps watch over you without ever falling asleep. Nobody can promise the day things get better, but this sermon says plainly that help is coming. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Psalm 121 and shows that God is always watching, always near and strong enough to keep your life. Questions this sermon answers Where does my help come from? Psalm 121 points past the hills to God, so look to him for help and not to the news. What is Psalm 121 about? It is a song from people who had already come through a long, hard season and could say God kept them, which tells us hard seasons end. Is God watching over me right now? Yes, the psalm says the one who keeps you does not sleep, and his care often shows up in blessings we have stopped noticing. Is God with me if I feel alone? Yes, the Lord is your keeper and your shade, so even alone in an apartment you are not by yourself. Scripture: Psalm 121 Chapters 0:00 Opening prayer 0:47 Reading Scripture honestly in hard times 1:40 Psalm 121: help is coming 3:00 When life feels like a battlefield 6:42 Where does my help come from? 14:33 God is watching over you and God is near 22:11 God has the power to keep you Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #HelpIsComing #Psalm121

How to Deal with Anxiety | Philippians 4:6-8 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

When your plans change every day and the news keeps getting heavier, learning how to deal with anxiety starts with where you take it. Paul wrote about anxiety while he was a prisoner, and his answer was to bring everything to God in prayer and thanksgiving. God's own peace then guards your heart and your mind, and you turn your attention to helping someone else. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Philippians 4:6-8 during the first shelter-in-place week in the Bay Area and shows what Paul's prayer from custody means for a crowded home and a calendar that keeps changing. Questions this sermon answers How do you deal with anxiety? Bring everything to God in prayer, the small things included, and give thanks while you wait. How do you cope with anxiety? Treat prayer as rest in God and time with him, and sometimes the relationship matters more than the answer. What does the Bible say about anxiety? Philippians 4:6-8 says to bring every need to God instead of carrying it anxiously, and promises that his peace will guard your heart and mind. How do you stop overthinking and anxiety? God's peace guards the mind where overthinking lives, and verse 8 points your thoughts toward what is good and toward someone you can help. Scripture: Philippians 4:6-8 Chapters 0:00 Scripture and prayer 2:10 When your reality gets rearranged 6:47 Paul writes from a jail cell 9:09 Bring everything to prayer 11:07 Prayer, rest and thanksgiving 15:45 God's peace guards your heart and mind 20:26 Refocus: go help someone Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #Anxiety #Philippians4

You're Built for This: Hope in Suffering | Romans 5:1-11 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

When the news keeps changing and you wonder if you can handle what comes next, hope in suffering can feel out of reach. Romans 5 says suffering can build hope when it rests on the right foundation, which is peace with God through grace. Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope, and God's love covers us through all of it. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Romans 5:1-11 as the coronavirus reached the Bay Area and shows why believers are built for hard seasons. Questions this sermon answers How do you have hope in suffering? Build on what Jesus did on the cross instead of on your knowledge, resources or gifts, because the peace God gives doesn't need everything around you to be perfect. How should a Christian respond in hard times? Stay realistic, use the wisdom God gave you, and serve the people about to fall through the cracks, like hourly workers, kids, students and seniors. Does trusting God mean ignoring wisdom? No. God gave us minds to reason with, so we can use what we know about how disease spreads and still check on the sick and the seniors. What does it mean that God's love covers us? Romans 5:8 says God showed his love for us in that Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and his grace is enough for what he asks of us. Scripture: Romans 5:1-11 Chapters 0:00 You're built for this season 0:38 Romans 5:1-11 and prayer 2:59 A believer's response to panic 7:27 Foundation: peace with God 15:06 How suffering builds hope 22:42 Covering: God's love 28:08 My hope is built on Jesus Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #HopeInSuffering #Romans5
