Letting Go of the Past: God Gives a New Name | John 1 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Letting go of the past is hard when you still answer to old names, like the one a parent used in anger or the word an ex left behind. God renames and remakes people, and every name he gives points forward to who you will become. When Jesus first met Simon, he gave him a new name, Peter, long before Simon acted like a rock. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on John 1:40-42 and shows why the church has to stop naming people by their mistakes or by its own timeline. It is part of the EMBRACE series. Questions this sermon answers How do you let go of the past spiritually? Listen for the name God speaks over you, because the names from your past keep you caged and his name points to your future. How do you let go of the past and move on? Fall more in love with what God has in your future than with what was in your past. How do you let go of your past self and become who God made you? Keep walking through the messy middle, the way Peter did, since Jesus called him the rock while he was still hot-headed. Does God really rename people? Yes. Jacob became Israel and Simon became Peter, and God still remakes people who believe in Jesus. What to Do When You're Doubting God | John 20:24-29 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

We double check the news, the group chat and the trade rumor, so it makes sense that some of us end up doubting God too. Doubt does not disqualify you. Jesus came back for Thomas, made room for his doubt and waited for him to reach out, and he makes the same room for you today. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on John 20:24-29 and shows how Jesus embraced Thomas instead of pushing him out. Questions this sermon answers What should you do when you are doubting God? Be honest about it, then take one next step toward God, like more time in prayer or joining a small group. Why do I keep doubting God? Most of us have learned to double check everything we hear, and that habit reaches our faith too. Can faith and doubt go together? Yes, because doubt can push you to seek God in new ways and help your faith grow. How did Jesus treat doubting Thomas? He came back to the room, opened his arms and invited Thomas to touch his wounds. Feeling Lonely? How to Deal with It | 1 Samuel 30:1-8 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

You can live in one of the busiest places in the country, know everybody's business online, and still come home feeling lonely. To deal with loneliness, start by stopping, then tell God honestly what you feel and bring it to the One who loves you without conditions. David did exactly that at Ziklag, when his home was burned and his own men turned against him. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on 1 Samuel 30:1-8 and Psalm 142 and shows how David found strength in the Lord when he was alone. Questions this sermon answers How do you deal with loneliness when it feels like nobody gets you? Stop, get honest with God about what is going on in your heart, and bring it to the God who loves you without conditions. Can you feel lonely in a crowd? Yes, because loneliness comes from what is happening in your heart, not from how many people are around you. Why is loneliness so common in Silicon Valley? Many of us moved here for school or work, and we use our phones and feeds in place of real relationships. What did David do when he felt alone? He stopped and prayed before he chased after what he had lost, and he found his strength in the Lord. Scripture: 1 Samuel 30:1-8, Psalm 142 Chapters 0:00 Reading 1 Samuel 30 2:34 Lonely in a crowd 4:47 Why loneliness hits hard in Silicon Valley 7:30 Seven kinds of loneliness 16:06 What loneliness does to us 20:27 How to deal with loneliness: stop and be honest with God 28:21 A God who loves you Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #Loneliness #1Samuel30

Broken Relationship? How to Fix It | John 21:15-17 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Most of us have someone we love where the conversation just doesn't work anymore, and we wonder how to fix a broken relationship before it hardens for good. Forgiveness is where healing starts, and reconciliation is the harder work that comes after. Jesus showed how with Peter: he picked a calm setting and a good moment, opened with a question rooted in love, and pointed Peter toward the future. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on John 21:15-17 and shows how Jesus restored Peter after Peter denied him three times. Questions this sermon answers How do you fix a broken relationship? Meet on neutral ground at a good time, open with love instead of the past, and then walk into the future together. What is the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation? Forgiveness happens inside you and does not need the other person, while reconciliation happens between two people and takes a conversation. Why do relationships break down? Things go unsaid, hurts sit for years, and most of us are too busy building our argument to listen. How did Jesus reconcile with Peter? Over breakfast he asked Peter if he loved him, and then he gave Peter work to do caring for his people. Scripture: John 21:15-17 Chapters 0:00 The Broken Places series 0:40 When communication breaks down 2:33 Reading John 21:15-17 5:15 Forgiveness vs. reconciliation 10:09 Peter's denial 15:03 How Jesus reconciled with Peter 23:03 Trust the process Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #Reconciliation #John21

Why Does Family Hurt You the Most? | Genesis 45:1-8 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

You can run a team or finish a PhD and still find that one phone call with your sister undoes you, which is why family can hurt you the most. You start healing from family hurt by admitting how much it hurt, owning the part you played, and letting God show you how he used it. That is what Joseph did when he finally faced the brothers who sold him into slavery. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Genesis 45:1-8 in the Broken Places series and shows how Joseph's family system shaped him and how he began to heal. Questions this sermon answers Why does family hurt you the most? Family carries our deepest joy and our deepest stress, and siblings, your longest relationship, know exactly which buttons to press. How do you heal when family hurts you? Admit the pain first, because you cannot heal a wound until you admit you have it, and admitting pain is different from assigning blame. What if my family never changes? Some family members are never going to come around, so pray for your own healing and don't let their brokenness wound you every day. How do you break a generational curse in your family? Be the one who reaches out with honesty and affection, the reconciler of your generation, the way Joseph was in his. Scripture: Genesis 45:1-8 Chapters 0:00 Opening word 0:47 Everyone has broken places 2:35 Why family 4:11 Reading Genesis 45:1-8 7:26 Why family hurts the most 22:07 Admit the pain, own your part 33:51 Breaking generational curses Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #Family #Genesis45

When Life Doesn't Go as Planned | Job 42:10-12 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

You got the degree and landed the job you wanted since you were a kid, and life still doesn't go as planned. When your plans fall apart, stop giving your energy to people who only blame you, take a real season to heal, and stay open to where God leads next. That is how the book of Job ends, with God blessing Job's later days more than his beginning. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Job 42:10-12 in the Broken Places series and shows that God is still paying attention when you are stuck in the middle of your story. Questions this sermon answers How do you keep faith in difficult times? Remember that God sees the end of the story when you can't, and that the devil had to go to God before he could touch Job. How do you trust God when life doesn't go as planned? Pray about your decisions and stay open to where God leads, because if Job had followed only his own plan he would have missed the blessing. Who should I stop listening to when my plans fail? People who can only blame you, like Job's friends, so pray for them and move on instead of trying to convince them. Why do I need time to heal after broken dreams? You can't go through broken dreams and act like nothing happened, so rest, and let a faith community pray for you and point you back to Jesus.
