Belonging beyond Sunday / UAMEZ Church

What Is a Class Leader at UAMEZ Church?

When you join UAMEZ, you are assigned a Class Leader. They are someone who stays in touch, notices when you are missing, and helps make sure care is more than a Sunday greeting.

The heart of the role

Who keeps showing up for you?

UAMEZ is a historically Black, multicultural congregation in Palo Alto. Becoming a member means becoming part of a church where care has a human face.

Each Class Leader cares for about 12 to 15 members. That smaller circle makes room for an actual conversation, not just an unanswered text.

Care, in practice

How does a Class Leader care for me?

Care is made visible in ordinary moments: a conversation, a check-in, a prayer, and knowing when to ask for more help.

  1. How often will we really talk?

At least once a month, a Class Leader has a real conversation with each person in their care. Not an unanswered text sent to check a box.

  2. What if I miss a few Sundays?

If someone misses two Sundays in a row, their Class Leader reaches out. The point is to connect, not to make attendance a public record.

  3. What happens in hard seasons?

When someone is sick or homebound, their Class Leader checks in weekly. They pray, and bring in the Pastor when more care is needed.

An old practice, still alive

Why do we watch over one another in love?

1739

Methodism was started by John Wesley in 1739 with groups that prayed and watched over one another in love. Class Leaders continue that tradition at UAMEZ today.

It is a way of making a large church feel personal, one relationship at a time.

Two ways to belong

How is a Class Leader different from a small group?

These are different kinds of connection, and there is room for both. One gives ongoing care to members; the other makes space to gather with people for a season.

Ongoing / for members

A Class Leader

Assigned when you join the church. Your Class Leader stays connected year-round, with a regular rhythm of conversation and care.

Seasonal / a place to gather

A small group

Small groups change with the seasons. They offer another place to meet people, share conversation, and grow together.

Care has support behind it

Who supports the Class Leaders?

A Leader of Leaders supports the Class Leaders. When a situation calls for more care, a Class Leader can bring in the Pastor.

Good questions

What might you be wondering?

You do not have to know church language to find your way here.

When do I get a Class Leader?

A Class Leader is assigned when you join the church. If you are exploring membership, Next Steps is where to begin. Want to join or serve? Start with Next Steps.

What does staying in touch mean?

At least one real conversation each month, with a reach-out after two missed Sundays. If someone is sick or homebound, their Class Leader checks in weekly, prays, and brings in the Pastor when more care is needed.

Is this the same as a small group?

No. Class Leaders stay connected with members year-round. Small groups are seasonal gatherings that can change over time.

Can I ask a question first?

Of course. Call (650) 272-6742 or email info@uamez.com to speak with the church directly.
