When Life Knocks You Down, Get Back Up | Acts 20:7-12 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

A layoff, a loss, burnout or anxiety can knock you down even when you did nothing wrong. Falling is not always about sin, because we live in a broken world. You get back up by giving God a strong yes and staying close to a church whose faith can carry you when you cannot carry yourself. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Acts 20:7-12, where a young man named Eutychus falls from a third-story window during Paul's late-night message and is brought back to life. Preached in June 2023. Questions this sermon answers What happened to Eutychus in Acts 20? He fell asleep while Paul preached past midnight, fell from a third-story window and died, and Paul went down, held him and he lived. Why do Christians fall if it isn't always sin? Loss, distraction, personal weakness, the people around us and pressure on our minds can all knock us down. What does it mean to give God a strong yes? It means making God your priority and showing up even when you are tired, the way Eutychus came to hear Paul after a long day. Why does church matter when I'm struggling? A church with strong faith expects God to move, and its people pray you back up when you have fallen. Scripture: Acts 20:7-12; 1 Kings 17:21-22; 2 Kings 4:34-35; Matthew 9:24-25 Chapters 0:00 I've fallen and I can't get up 5:35 Why we fall when it isn't sin 10:10 How your environment pulls you down 15:20 Acts 20: Paul and Eutychus 20:36 Give God a strong yes 25:54 A church with strong faith lifts you up Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #GetBackUp #Acts20

How to Balance Money and God | Matthew 6:19-24 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

The Amazon boxes keep coming and the next payout never feels like enough. How do you balance money and God when you live in one of the richest places on earth? Pastor Kaloma Smith says the danger lies in serving money, since Jesus says no one can serve both God and money. The big lie is that more stuff will finally make you content. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Matthew 6:19-24 and shows how Jesus frees you from the slavery of stuff. He preached it in June 2023 as part of a series called Live Generously. Questions this sermon answers Is it wrong for Christians to have money? Pastor Smith says no, and that the problem starts when money becomes your master and shapes who you are. Why does buying more never feel like enough? He points to Ecclesiastes 5:10, which says whoever loves money will never have enough. What does it mean to store up treasure in heaven? He says to put your effort into what lasts, like children growing up in faith, instead of things that decay on a shelf. What does the widow's offering teach about giving? In Mark 12:41-44 Jesus says she gave more than the rich because she gave all she had, which showed where her heart was. Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24; Matthew 13:22; Ecclesiastes 5:10; 1 Timothy 6:6; Mark 12:41-44 Chapters 0:00 Living generously in Silicon Valley 1:14 The good news and bad news about being rich 2:23 The big lie and the deceitfulness of riches 5:06 Arcade tickets and our shopping habits 8:41 You cannot serve God and money 18:42 What money can't buy 26:12 The widow's two coins Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #GodAndMoney #Matthew6

How to Date as a Christian | Ephesians 5:22-33 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Dating apps and splitting the check have shaped how a lot of us date, so what does Christian dating look like in Silicon Valley now? Date with intention, looking for the partner God has for you, and do not settle or date out of loneliness. In marriage, love is a choice you make every day, built on God at the center and selfless love. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Ephesians 5:22-33 and shows what love and respect look like from the first date through a long marriage. It was preached in 2023, as part 2 of the series Dating, Sex and Marriage. Questions this sermon answers How should a Christian date? With intention and the end goal of marriage in mind, never for sport, out of loneliness or because everyone else does. Is there such a thing as a soulmate? Pastor Kaloma says no one fits you perfectly at every moment, and love is a choice you make every day. Why does being equally yoked matter? When hard times come, a couple who share the same God and the same language of prayer can turn to him together. What makes a marriage last? Selfless love, where each partner asks how to meet the other's needs, the way Christ gave himself for the church. Scripture: Ephesians 5:22-33 Chapters 0:00 Dating, Sex and Marriage part 2: love and respect 0:58 Reading Ephesians 5:22-33 3:10 Love and respect in premarital counseling 4:52 Don't date for sport 6:50 Who pays? What Does the Bible Say About Sex? | Genesis 1-2 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Dating apps, hookup culture and years of church silence have left a lot of people unsure what the Bible actually says about sex. Pastor Smith takes a high view of sex as a good gift from God, designed for marriage. You are made in God's image, so you deserve to be loved and cared for, and in marriage sex is about serving your spouse. In this sermon, preached in February 2023 as part one of a Valentine's series on dating, sex and marriage, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Genesis 1 and 2 and 1 Corinthians 7 and explains what sex is for. Questions this sermon answers What does the Bible say about sex? It treats sex as a good gift from God, made for marriage, both for bringing new life and for joy without shame between husband and wife. Is sex only meant for marriage? Pastor Smith teaches that God designed sex for marriage, and that sex outside that design can leave emotional scars because it reaches your soul. Why does being made in God's image matter for dating? Because you bear God's image, you are not a swipe or a side piece, and you deserve someone who loves and cares for you. What if I regret my sexual past? Your past is not your future, and God gives new mercies every morning as he keeps changing you. Scripture: Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 2:24-25; 1 Corinthians 7:4-5 Chapters 0:00 Why the church needs to talk about sex 3:29 You are made in the image of God 11:20 What is sex for? 17:12 Serving your spouse in 1 Corinthians 7 20:38 Sex outside God's design 24:56 Your past is not your future 28:16 Prayer for healing Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #ChristianDating #Genesis1

Going Through Hard Times? God Sees You | Genesis 16 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

In Silicon Valley it's easy to believe the fix for a hard season is to leave for something that looks easier. If you're going through hard times, Hagar's story says something different. Pastor Kaloma Smith says God found Hagar in the wilderness before she ever looked for him, and saw her as a specific person. God sees you too, and the growth you need may be waiting in the hard place you want to escape. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Genesis 16:7-13 and shows why the God who saw Hagar also sees you. He preached it in February 2023. Questions this sermon answers What does the God who sees me mean? Hagar gave God that name after the angel of the Lord met her in the wilderness, and Pastor Smith says it means God cares about you personally, not from a distance. Why did God tell Hagar to go back? He says God met her need for her future, and that future ran through the difficult place she was running from. Does God meet people outside of church? Yes. Hagar was not at a temple, she was in the wilderness, and God came looking for her. Should I leave a hard situation for something easier? Pastor Smith says the grass is not always greener, and his own greatest growth came in difficult seasons. Scripture: Genesis 16:7-13 Chapters 0:00 Hagar meets God in the wilderness 0:33 When you want to run from a hard place 3:43 God appears to an enslaved woman 5:20 Hagar's story and Sarai's plan 9:00 The God who sees you 14:55 God meets you in your wilderness 17:00 Your destiny in difficult places Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #HardTimes #Genesis16

What Is Advent? A Season of Expectation | Isaiah 2:1-5 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Kids count down to presents, and grownups head into the holidays expecting things from work and family. What is Advent, and what do you expect from God this season? Pastor Kaloma Smith says Advent is a season of expectation, when we look back to Jesus' first coming and ahead to his promised return. Because God kept the first promise, you can trust him with the rest. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Isaiah 2:1-5 and shows how Isaiah's vision of the mountain of the Lord gives hope in uncertain times. He preached it at the start of Advent in 2022. Questions this sermon answers What is Advent? Pastor Smith describes it as the weeks before Christmas when Christians expect God to act, remembering Jesus' birth and looking for his second coming. Is it okay to have expectations of God? He says yes, because the Bible invites you to bring God your requests and the desires of your heart. What does swords into plowshares mean? Isaiah pictures weapons turned into farm tools, and Pastor Smith says Jesus does the same with the negative scripts in our minds, turning them into something that bears fruit. Where does hope come from when life feels uncertain? He says it comes from going to God and walking in God's ways, even when your circumstances stay the same. Scripture: Isaiah 2:1-5 Chapters 0:00 Reading Isaiah 2:1-5 2:05 What a child teaches us about expectations 5:42 What do you expect from God this Advent? 9:18 The mountain of the Lord above every hill 13:21 When the nations flow uphill to God 15:23 Hope comes from walking with God 21:11 Swords into plowshares and the peace God gives Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #Advent #Isaiah2

How to Love Your Neighbor as Yourself | Matthew 22 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If you keep ending up in toxic relationships or keep repeating your family's worst habits, start with how to love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God with everything and to love your neighbor as yourself, and you cannot do the second well if you cannot love yourself. God's love takes the baggage of your past and calls you out of patterns that keep hurting you. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Matthew 22:36-40 and shows how God's love teaches us to love ourselves and then our neighbors. Preached in October 2022. Questions this sermon answers What is the greatest commandment? Jesus answered with two: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Why is it so hard to love yourself? You know every secret and old wound, and many of us still hear the voices that put us down as kids. How do I break toxic relationship patterns? Answer God's call to walk away from the drama, and pray for godly people instead of choosing the same kind of partner again. Does God's love actually change you? Yes. As you keep walking with Jesus, your attitude and your relationships start to change from the inside. Scripture: Matthew 22:36-40; Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18 Chapters 0:00 Matthew 22:36-40: the greatest commandment 1:08 What's Love Got to Do with It and toxic relationships 4:15 The trick question Jesus was asked 6:44 Love God, then love your neighbor as yourself 13:47 Atoning love: drop the baggage of your past 19:14 Answering God's call out of toxic patterns 28:24 Love that changes you Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #LoveYourNeighbor #Matthew22

How to Deal With Loneliness | Luke 19:1-10 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

You can sit in a full room, or even a marriage, and still feel like nobody sees you. Here is how to deal with loneliness when you feel invisible. Pastor Kaloma Smith says Jesus looked past the whole crowd in Jericho and called Zacchaeus by name. Jesus sees you as you are and wants a personal relationship with you before you change a thing. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Luke 19:1-10 and shows how one meal with Jesus changed the way Zacchaeus saw everything. He preached it in October 2022. Questions this sermon answers Does God see me when I feel invisible? Pastor Smith says yes, because Jesus looked through the crowd to find Zacchaeus, and he will find you too. Why did Jesus go to Zacchaeus' house? Jesus wanted a personal relationship, so he invited himself to dinner without asking Zacchaeus to clean up his life first. Why did the crowd grumble about Zacchaeus? They saw a chief tax collector and a sinner, but Jesus saw someone he came to seek and to save. How does meeting Jesus change you? Zacchaeus gave half of what he had to the poor and promised to repay anyone he cheated, and Pastor Smith says Jesus keeps changing how you think the longer you walk with him. Scripture: Luke 19:1-10 Chapters 0:00 God sees you 0:33 Zacchaeus in the sycamore tree 1:52 Why so many people feel lonely and unseen 4:34 Zacchaeus, the outsider Jesus noticed 12:51 Jesus will find you in the crowd 15:07 Jesus wants a personal relationship with you 29:35 Meeting Jesus changes your mind Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #Loneliness #Luke19

All Things Work Together for Good | Romans 8:28 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Between the news cycle, social media and plans that fell apart, it can be hard to believe that all things work together for good. Romans 8:28 rests on God's love you have already seen in your own life, and his good is often better than the good you wanted. Some closed doors were God protecting you, and he made you for a purpose. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Romans 8:28 and shows how the words God and good frame the verse. It was preached on Aug 28, 2022, alongside more than a thousand pastors preaching this verse that day. Questions this sermon answers What does all things work together for good mean? It means God works through every part of life for those who love him, and you can trust that because of what his love has already done for you. Why did God close that door? Sometimes the job, partner or plan you wanted would have hurt you, and God's idea of good is bigger than yours. What does called according to his purpose mean? God designed you on purpose, and as you follow Jesus he shows you that purpose. How do I remember God's faithfulness when life is hard? Write down what God has done for you, so you can see his record when today feels impossible. Scripture: Romans 8:28; Romans 5:5 Chapters 0:00 Romans 8:28: all things work together 1:48 Guarding your mind from the news cycle 5:25 Social media and comparison 7:51 Trusting God when life doesn't make sense 10:02 God's love you can see in your own story 17:14 When God closes a door 21:44 Called according to his purpose Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #AllThingsWorkTogether #Romans828

What Does Psalm 23 Mean When Life Is Hard? | Psalm 23 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

When something keeps you up at night and life feels like it is pressing in, Psalm 23 has more to say than most of us remember. David calls God my shepherd, someone personal who stays with the flock day and night and fights off whatever attacks it. Pastor Smith shows that this shepherd gives you peace, protects you while you walk through hard things and prepares a future for you. In this sermon, preached in 2022 to close a summer series on the Psalms, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Psalm 23:1-6 and shows why believers can be bold in their assurance. Questions this sermon answers What does Psalm 23 mean? It describes God as a personal shepherd who leads you to peace, protects you in the valley and prepares a table and a future for you. Why is God called a shepherd? A shepherd was the sheep's lifeline, staying with them at all times and using the rod and staff to fight off predators. Does following God mean you avoid hard times? No. Psalm 23 says you walk through the valley, and God is with you in it and fights for you. What are goodness and mercy in Psalm 23? Pastor Smith says goodness is what money can't buy, like family and community, and mercy keeps following you even when you mess up. Scripture: Psalm 23:1-6 Chapters 0:00 Psalm 23 to close a summer series 0:56 For anyone who refuses to give up 3:24 Psalm 23 reading and prayer 5:15 Why calling God my shepherd was new 9:13 What a shepherd really did 13:29 Peace, protection and restoring your soul 29:21 A table before your enemies, goodness and mercy Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #GodIsMyShepherd #Psalm23

When You're Tired of Waiting on God | Psalm 33:14-22 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If you're tired of waiting on God for the job or the relationship, this sermon is for you. The waiting season is often where God takes off the weight you were never meant to carry. Money and a fresh start somewhere new cannot save you, so pray before you dive in and wait with God instead of with comparison and social media. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Psalm 33:14-22 and shows why the things we trust while we wait cannot rescue us. Preached in August 2022, close to his ninth anniversary as pastor of UAMEZ. Questions this sermon answers What does the Bible say about waiting on God? Psalm 33 says a king is not saved by his army and a war horse is a false hope, but the Lord watches over those who hope in his steadfast love. Why is waiting on God so hard? We live in a culture that expects quick results and constant comparison, so we rush into jobs and relationships before we pray. Will a new job or a move fix what I'm going through? It will not fix it by itself, because wherever you go, you bring yourself, so ask God to heal what is inside first. Is the wait worth it? Yes. While you wait, God brings people and blessings into your life that you never knew you needed. Scripture: Psalm 33:14-22 Chapters 0:00 The weight is lifted when we wait 1:12 His Eye Is on the Sparrow 2:58 Why is waiting so hard? 5:56 Psalm 33:14-22 reading 9:12 Rushing into relationships and decisions 15:33 Four things that can't save you 26:01 Why the wait is worth it Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #WaitingOnGod #Psalm33

When You Feel Defeated, Praise God First | Psalm 63 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

You have the job and the nice place, and part of your life still feels like a loss. Here is how to stop feeling defeated. In Psalm 63, David is hiding in the wilderness from his own son, and he still thirsts for God and praises before anything changes. Pastor Kaloma Smith says victory starts when you admit you're powerless and begin to praise God before the breakthrough comes. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Psalm 63 and shows how David held on to God while Absalom held the throne. He preached it in 2022 during a series on the Psalms. Questions this sermon answers How do you stop feeling defeated? Pastor Smith says to start by admitting you are powerless, because letting go of control frees you from so much anxiety. Why praise God before a prayer is answered? He says praising in advance is a mark of faith that trusts what God will do next. What was happening when David wrote Psalm 63? Pastor Smith follows scholars who link it to David fleeing his son Absalom, years after David had become king. How specific should my prayers be? He says to bring God the real person and the real situation, the way a child goes to a parent, instead of only asking for patience to get through. Scripture: Psalm 63 Chapters 0:00 From defeated to victorious 0:30 Psalm 63 and speaking victory over your life 5:07 When the world feels uncertain 6:54 David running from Absalom 13:32 Admit you're powerless and thirst for God 21:20 Praise God before the victory comes 30:07 Pray specific prayers for victory Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #FeelingDefeated #Psalm63
