Description

You can work all day on a campus full of people, go home to a quiet apartment, and wonder how to stop feeling lonely. Pastor Kaloma Smith says loneliness is a real wound and a chatbot cannot heal it, because a friend has to be able to give something up for you. Jesus did that, and he calls you his friend. In this sermon, preached April 26, 2026 in the Faith in the Age of AI series, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on John 15:12-13 and shows why AI companions can't give what Jesus and a real church family can. Questions this sermon answers Why do so many people in Silicon Valley feel lonely? He points to work campuses that keep breakfast, the gym and lunch inside one set of walls, so people stop running into neighbors in the places that used to connect them. Can an AI companion be a real friend? No. A chatbot never pushes back, never has a bad day and never says no, and he says that trains a heart to expect love with no friction. What does Jesus mean when he calls us friends in John 15? He takes the covenant word used for Abraham, Moses, and David and Jonathan, and gives it to disciples who are about to fail him. How do I stop feeling lonely? He says one Sunday a week cannot do it alone. Change comes from showing up with the same people week after week, starting with a Next Steps class and a small group.
