What Does the Bible Say About Money? | Luke 16:13 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If scrolling past other people's trips and purchases leaves you anxious about what you don't have, this sermon asks what the Bible says about money. Money itself is neutral, and the Bible never asks every believer to take a vow of poverty. The danger is materialism, which crowds out God, feeds anxiety and can make you look down on people who have less. In this sermon, preached in 2022 in the series Living a Generous Life, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Luke 16:13 and shows how chasing stuff gets in the way of loving God and people. Questions this sermon answers Is it wrong for a Christian to have money? No. Pastor Smith points to people like David, Solomon and Lydia and says what matters is how you use it. What does it mean that you cannot serve God and money? Money can't be your master, because when stuff becomes the center of your life there is little room left for God. Why does wanting more make me anxious? Comparing your life to what others have creates stress, and chasing things can make you miss the simple blessings God already gave you. How do I know if money is separating me from people? He asks whether all your friends share your income level and whether you avoid relatives because of what they have or don't have. Scripture: Luke 16:13 Chapters 0:00 A biblical perspective on money 0:42 Luke 16:13: you cannot serve God and money 1:27 Do Christians have to give it all away? 4:10 Money is neutral 5:10 Love people and use things 7:27 How materialism hurts your faith and peace 15:36 Don't let money separate you from people Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #BibleAndMoney #Luke16

Mother's Day Sermon: What Deborah Teaches | Judges 4 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Whether you call your mom every week or Mother's Day is complicated for you, this Mother's Day sermon is for you. Deborah led Israel through 20 years of oppression without panicking, and she went into battle when Barak would not go alone. Mothers and mother figures do the same for us, and Jesus loves us and fights for us in spite of our mistakes, even if we never had a mother like that. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Judges 4:1-9 and shows how the judge Deborah reflects the strength of a godly mother. Preached on Mother's Day 2022. Questions this sermon answers Who was Deborah in the Bible? She was a prophet and judge who led Israel, settled the people's disputes and went with Barak into battle against Sisera. What if I don't have a good relationship with my mother? God often places mother figures in our lives, and Jesus steps in for the motherless child with a love that never quits. Scripture: Judges 4:1-9 Chapters 0:00 The intuition of a mother 0:57 Judges 4:1-9: the story of Deborah 3:24 Why we always call Mom 5:12 Mothers by birth and mother figures 8:24 How mothers handle hard times 12:27 A mother brings peace 15:48 A mother fights for her children Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #MothersDay #Judges4

Woman With the Issue of Blood | Matthew 9:20-22 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

One hard season can spill into your sleep and your work long after the problem is gone. The woman with the issue of blood knew that feeling, and Jesus did more than stop the bleeding. Pastor Kaloma Smith says Jesus healed her body and gave back the respect her town had taken from her. Being made whole means God deals with the scars a hard season leaves, along with the problem itself. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Matthew 9:20-22 and shows why Jesus wants more for you than a fix for one issue. He preached it in May 2022, when AME Zion churches across the Western Episcopal District preached the same theme, Be Made Whole. Questions this sermon answers What does it mean to be made whole? Pastor Smith says it is more than getting rid of one problem, because God also heals the trauma and scars that problem left behind. Why did the woman with the issue of blood touch Jesus' garment? She believed that getting close enough to touch the hem of his garment would be enough to heal her. Should Christians pray or see a doctor? He says he believes in medical and mental health care, and that healing should start with prayer, because God can lead you to the right doctor or therapist. Does God give back what a hard season took? He says God gives back time and a good night's sleep on the other side of trauma. Scripture: Matthew 9:20-22 Chapters 0:00 One church family, one theme 0:47 What it means to be made whole 1:54 The woman who touched the hem of his garment 2:50 When one problem affects your whole life 5:40 Jairus and the woman in the crowd 9:31 Jesus heals her body and her self-respect 18:07 God gives back what you lost Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #BeMadeWhole #Matthew9

Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | Ephesians 6 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Does a voice keep telling you that you can't raise your kids or do the work God gave you? Here is what the Bible says about spiritual warfare. Pastor Kaloma Smith says the devil's main scheme is often to keep you living below what God made you for, through lies and accusation. The devil is not God, and the armor of God in Ephesians 6 gives you real protection. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Ephesians 6:10-20 and shows why the people who hurt you are not your real enemy. He preached it in March 2022, near the end of a series on Ephesians. Questions this sermon answers What does the Bible say about spiritual warfare? Ephesians 6 says our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil, and God gives us armor so we can stand firm. What are signs of spiritual warfare? Pastor Smith says the enemy lies, accuses and tempts, often by convincing you that you can't do what God designed you to do. Can social media be part of the attack? He says the devil can use it to make you compare your life with pictures of other lives that are not real. How should a Christian respond to people who tear them down? He says they may be used without realizing it, so you don't need to fight them, because God wins by proving them wrong. Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-20 Chapters 0:00 What Ephesians 6 says about spiritual warfare 5:46 Social media and keeping up with the Joneses 7:40 How the devil works: lies and accusation 9:31 You are not broken 13:36 We do not wrestle against flesh and blood 17:12 The armor of God in dark times Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #SpiritualWarfare #Ephesians6

Does God Give Second Chances? | Deuteronomy 10:10-11 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If regret keeps replaying in your head and you wonder whether God gives second chances, this Advent sermon answers plainly: he does. After Israel built the golden calf and Moses broke the tablets, God called Moses back up the mountain, listened to him, and wrote the law again. God still listens, still refuses to destroy you, and still keeps his promises after you fail. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Deuteronomy 10:10-11 and shows why the birth of Jesus is God's offer of a second chance. It was preached during Advent in 2021. Questions this sermon answers Does God give second chances? Yes. Scripture is full of people who fumbled, and God kept coming back to them, most of all by sending Jesus. Will God listen to me after I mess up? Yes. God listened to Moses for 40 days while Israel was in open rebellion, and he will listen to you. Should church be a place of judgment or grace? Pastor Kaloma says the church should be the place for second chances, teaching God's ways without condemning people. Does God still keep his promises after I fail? Yes. God told Moses to lead the people into the land he promised, even after the golden calf. Scripture: Deuteronomy 10:10-11 Chapters 0:00 Advent and a second chance 2:13 Why Advent means God gives second chances 3:46 Living with regret 6:01 God cares about your soul more than your mistakes 9:48 Moses, the golden calf and the second tablets 21:30 God keeps his promises Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #SecondChances #Deuteronomy

How to Pray for Others | Romans 8:26-28 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

When someone you love is struggling and you don't know what to say to God, this sermon shows how to pray for others. Intercessory prayer means asking God to act on someone else's behalf, and Jesus came to earth to do exactly that for us. Romans 8 says the Spirit helps us when we don't know what to pray, so you don't need perfect words to start. In this sermon, preached in 2021 as the last message in a two-month series on prayer, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Romans 8:26-28 and shows how prayer can grow from your own circle to your community and the world. Questions this sermon answers What is intercessory prayer? It is praying to God for someone else and asking heaven to move in their life. What if I don't know what to pray? Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps us in our weakness and prays for us when we have no words, and God looks at your heart more than your form. Why doesn't God answer my prayers the way I want? Pastor Smith says some prayers come from ego, and lining up with God's will brings more peace than getting every request. Should Christians pray for the whole world? Yes. He describes personal, community and global prayer and says God can lead you to pray for things bigger than you can picture. Scripture: Romans 8:26-28 Chapters 0:00 What is intercessory prayer? 2:50 A child who knows who to call 6:16 Jesus came to intercede for us 11:25 Romans 8: the Spirit prepares us to pray 16:33 Praying past words and praying God's will 24:38 Praying for your community and the world Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #IntercessoryPrayer #Romans8

What Our Father Who Art in Heaven Means | Matthew 6:9 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

You may have said Our Father who art in heaven a hundred times without stopping to ask what it means for your prayers today. Those first words tell you who you are praying to: one God who is yours, who loves you like a perfect Father. Heaven reminds you that this God has the position and power to help, and that he keeps his promises. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Matthew 6:9 and shows why the opening line of the Lord's Prayer makes Christian prayer different from wishing. Preached in October 2021 as the first sermon in a series on prayer. Questions this sermon answers What does Our Father in heaven mean? It means we pray to the one God who is ours and who relates to us as a loving Father. How can I call God Father if my own father hurt me or was not there? Human fathers all fall short, but God's love as a Father has no gaps, and he can meet you in your midnight hours. What makes Christian prayer different from wishing for something? We pray to a God who has the power to act and who has promised to stay with us. Why does the Lord's Prayer mention heaven? Heaven points to God above everything, with the power to change things and the promise of eternal life. Scripture: Matthew 6:9 Chapters 0:00 A new sermon series on prayer 1:54 Why start with the Lord's Prayer? 3:26 What makes Christian prayer different? 7:02 Our: praying to the one true God 11:56 Father: when your earthly father fell short 16:27 Heaven: God's position, power and promise 27:27 Standing on the promises of God Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #LordsPrayer #Matthew6

Is God Protecting Me? The Armor of God | Ephesians 6 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If school, work, family visits and even church stopped feeling normal and you have been asking whether God is protecting you, this sermon is for you. God gives you a real defense, and his protection is personal because you are part of his family. You stand firm by putting on every piece of the armor of God and by calling on him in prayer. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Ephesians 6:10-20 and shows who protects you, what you are protected from, and how the armor of God works in real life. It was preached in 2021. Questions this sermon answers What is the armor of God? It is the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith and the helmet of salvation, worn together and held up by prayer. How do I put on the full armor of God? Start by being honest about your own part in a conflict, keep peace in your heart, store up memory verses, and stay in a real relationship with Jesus and his church. Is spiritual warfare real? Pastor Kaloma teaches that the devil is real but limited: he deceives, tempts and distracts, and he can be resisted the way Jesus resisted him. Does God care about me personally? Yes. Through Jesus the veil was torn, so each person can come to God directly as part of his family. Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-20 Chapters 0:00 You're protected: reading Ephesians 6 5:16 When the rhythms of life fall apart 10:25 Why God is your defense 12:38 Who protects you: the strength of the Lord 16:08 Why God cares about you personally 19:35 Spiritual warfare and the schemes of the devil 27:00 How to put on the full armor of God Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #ArmorOfGod #Ephesians6

How to Handle Life Transitions | 1 Kings 3:4-14 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Life transitions keep coming, whether it is a promotion you don't feel ready for or a relationship that has to change, and plans rarely hold. Solomon stepped into a shaky new role and went to Gibeon to meet God before he did anything else. He asked for an understanding mind instead of asking God to fix his situation, and Pastor Smith says that kind of prayer changes you so the next situation goes differently. In this sermon, preached in 2021, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on 1 Kings 3:4-14 and walks through six kinds of transitions before showing how Solomon handled his. Questions this sermon answers How do you handle a big transition in life? Set yourself apart with God first, the way Solomon left the politics of Jerusalem for Gibeon, before you try to solve it. Why do Christians need time alone with God during change? Pastor Smith says time set apart for God, like a daily quiet time, resets your mind before the worry of the day takes over. What should I pray for when the same problems keep coming back? Ask God for wisdom and to change you, because the same dating pattern or dead-end job tends to repeat until you change. Why do people treat you differently when you grow? Growth in your position, influence, health or faith can unsettle people who still see you the way you used to be. Scripture: 1 Kings 3:4-14 Chapters 0:00 Life is full of transitions 5:06 Six kinds of transitions we face 6:30 When relationships change 9:57 Protecting your mental health 13:32 Growing in faith when others don't get it 17:14 Solomon's hard start as king 20:54 Set yourself apart and pray for wisdom Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #LifeTransitions #1Kings3

Hope in Hard Times When Life Is Broken | Lamentations 5 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

Hard times can stack up until your family, your job, your health and the news all feel broken at once. God still has an answer when life is broken. He redeems the broken places in your life, keeps his promises, and finds new ways to reach people, even in exile and even in a pandemic. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Lamentations 5 and shows how the prayer at the end of one of the Bible's hardest books got answered. Questions this sermon answers How do you find hope in hard times? Look at what God has already done: exile was not the end for his people, and God still steps into the broken places in your life to redeem them. How do you trust God in times of uncertainty? Trust the God who keeps his promises, the same God who promised a redeemer and kept that promise in Jesus, so you don't have to live as a defeated person. How to Find Hope Again | Lamentations 3:22-23 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

When life has you running on empty and God feels far away, how do you find hope again? The writer of Lamentations 3 names his pain honestly, then chooses to call God's faithfulness to mind. God's steadfast love does not run out, and God often walks with you through the hard place instead of flying you over it. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Lamentations 3 and shows why God's covenant love holds even in the darkest seasons. He preached it in March 2021, as week three of a series on Lamentations. Questions this sermon answers What does great is thy faithfulness mean? The phrase comes from Lamentations 3, where the writer remembers that God's steadfast love never stops and God's mercies are new every morning. What does the Hebrew word hesed mean? Pastor Smith explains it as covenant love or loyal love, a love from God that stays faithful to its promises no matter what you face. How do you find hope again when God feels far away? He says to look for God's goodness along the way, because God is often walking beside you and carrying part of the weight. Why do we miss what God is doing in hard times? He says complaining and blaming can keep us from seeing the help God has already put beside us. Scripture: Lamentations 3 Chapters 0:00 Reading Lamentations 3 2:13 This I call to mind: the turn to hope 6:30 Reading the Bible from a new perspective 9:49 How the book of Lamentations is built 11:53 When life leaves you broken 19:32 God's steadfast love and goodness 28:36 God's compassion never fails Join us Sundays at 10 AM PT, 3549 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, or live at youtube.com/@uamez Plan your visit: uamez.com Instagram: instagram.com/uamezchurch Facebook: facebook.com/uamezchurch #UAMEZChurch #FindHope #Lamentations3

What Is Lament in the Bible? | Lamentations 1 | UAMEZ Church

Watch this message

If the last stretch of your life has left you numb, tired or quietly grieving, you may be asking what lament is and whether God wants to hear it. Lament is speaking honestly to God about a present pain and asking for help. Healing starts when you admit the hurt instead of acting like you are fine. In this sermon, Pastor Kaloma Smith of UAMEZ Church in Palo Alto, California preaches on Lamentations 1 and shows how Jerusalem's grief moves through pain, honesty and a reset with God. It was preached in 2021, during Lent. Questions this sermon answers What is lament in the Bible? It is a prayer where a person brings a present calamity to God and asks God to help them through it. Is it OK to grieve and be sad as a Christian? Yes. You do not have to be tough or hold it all together, and God is big enough to hear your cry. Why is honesty about sin part of lament? Lamentations 1 names Jerusalem's sin plainly, and some pain will not heal until we own our part before God. Can I start over with God after a hard season? Yes. Even when consequences remain, God is still on the other side, and through Jesus you can reset. Scripture: Lamentations 1:1-22 Chapters 0:00 Reading Lamentations 1 8:04 What is lament?
