Hebrews 10:24-25 and What It Means to Be With Your People

5-Day Devotional · September 2026

Amazing family,

Last Sunday, we baptized 3 people. And when I tell you the whole family showed up, ohh, we showed up for real. That's what being in community is: we encourage, we celebrate, we correct one another, and we stand up for each other.

I want to open up this week's devotional talking about what it means to be in REAL community. What does it mean to let people in and let them see the real you.

Most of us have gotten good at hiding even in a room full of people. We show up, we smile, but we never let anyone all the way in. We guard ourselves to protect against past pains because we don't want to get hurt again.

But here's the thing about community: it isn't a crowd cheering you on from a distance. It's being with somebody who sees your wounds and doesn't flinch. And being fully seen isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it means hearing the truth, not just what feels good.

So, this week, we're going to spend 5 days looking at what it means to be with YOUR people and show up in community. But you don't have to wait to start. I encourage you to do one of these: send the text you've been putting off, sit with somebody after service, or come be with us Sunday.

WATCH THE FULL MESSAGE

DAY 1 - Made For This

Hebrews 10:24-25 · NRSVUE

"And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day approaching."

Loneliness is one of the quietest struggles people carry. You can be surrounded by people and still feel completely unseen. Many of us have learned to keep others at a safe distance, because closeness has cost us before.

God did not design you for isolation. He created you for connection, with Him and with the people walking the same road you're on. From the earliest church, believers gathered together, ate together, prayed together, and carried one another's burdens.

You may be reading this after a season of pulling back. Maybe church hurt you. Maybe life got busy. Maybe you just got tired. Whatever the reason, there is an open door. Community isn't reserved for people who have it all together. It's built by people who show up anyway, wounds and all.

"The Christian faith is built on connection." — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

What is one thing that has kept you from fully engaging in Christian community, and what would it look like to take one small step toward it this week?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for designing us for connection and not isolation. Give us the courage to take one step toward community today, even when it feels risky. Show us who You've placed nearby to open the door to. Amen.

DAY 2 - Somebody Saw You

Hebrews 10:24-25 · NRSVUE

"And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day approaching."

Think back to a moment when someone believed in you before you believed in yourself. Maybe it was a mentor, a friend, a Sunday school teacher, or a stranger who said exactly the right thing at exactly the right time.

That is not an accident. Hebrews 10:24-25 calls us to consider one another, using a word that means a deliberate, intentional nudge toward something better. Real community doesn't just wait for people to figure things out on their own. It leans in.

You are where you are today, at least in part, because someone showed up for you. They saw something in you worth fighting for, and they acted on it. Now you carry that same gift to offer someone else.

"You didn't get here by yourself. Somebody provoked you to get up this morning when the bed was winning." — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

Who in your life right now might be waiting for someone to see them and believe in them, and what is one way you could be that person for them?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the people You placed in our lives who refused to let us stay stuck. Help us to be that same presence for someone else today. Show us who is waiting to be seen. Amen.

DAY 3 - Encourage And Correct

Hebrews 10:24-25 · NRSVUE

"And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day approaching."

Most of us enjoy encouragement. It feels good to be cheered on and told we're doing well. But if encouragement is all we ever receive, something important is missing.

Real community requires two things working together. First, someone has to genuinely see you and care for you. That's the foundation of trust. Then, from that place of trust, they can speak honestly into your life in ways that actually help you grow.

Encouragement alone creates a fan club. Correction alone creates a courtroom. But when someone earns your trust by truly showing up for you, their honest words carry a weight that can change your life.

"If you only do the first, you have a fan club. If you only do the second, you have a courtroom. Real community requires both in that order." — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

Is there someone in your life who has both encouraged and challenged you in love? How did their honesty shape who you are today?

Prayer

God, give us the humility to receive truth from people who love us, and the courage to speak truth to others when they need it most. Teach us to trust the ones who tell us the truth. Amen.

DAY 4 - Show Up Anyway

Hebrews 10:24-25 · NRSVUE

"And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day approaching."

There is something that happens when people gather in person that simply cannot be replicated on a screen. A text message is kind. A video call is helpful. Neither of them is the same as being in the same room, worshipping side by side, or sitting across a table and really talking.

Community isn't built in a single moment. It grows slowly, through repeated presence, shared meals, honest conversations, and the quiet act of showing up again and again. You cannot rush it or optimize it. It has to be built organically, over time, through real investment in real people.

Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us not to neglect meeting together. That instruction isn't just about attendance. It's about presence. There's a difference between being physically in a room and actually being present with the people around you.

"You cannot be efficient with spending time with people. Don't try to optimize that. Build it organically." — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

What is one practical step you could take this week to be more genuinely present with the people in your faith community?

Prayer

Lord, help us resist the pull toward isolation and show up fully for the people You've placed in our lives. Remind us that presence is one of the greatest gifts we can offer. Amen.

DAY 5 - Loved Enough

Hebrews 10:24-25 · NRSVUE

"And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day approaching."

Here's a truth worth sitting with: you're here because someone loved you enough to not leave you alone. Somebody reached out when you were pulling away. Somebody prayed for you when you'd stopped praying for yourself.

When the church says love, some of us flinch. Not because we're cold, but because love has hurt us before. That pain is real. But the love described in Hebrews 10:24-25 isn't naive or careless. It sees you clearly and chooses to stay anyway.

You were loved enough to be provoked toward something better. Now that same calling rests on you. Someone in your life needs to be seen, encouraged, and told the truth by someone they trust. Someone needs you to show up.

"You were loved enough to be provoked." — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

Thinking about the people who provoked you toward faith and growth, how does their investment in you inspire you to invest in someone else?

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving us through the people You placed in our lives. Give us the courage to carry that love forward and to provoke others toward the life You have for them. Amen.

A Prayer for the Week Ahead

Lord,

This week reminded us that we were never meant to do this alone. You have placed people in our lives who saw us, wounds and all, and loved us enough to tell us the truth.

Send us out as that kind of family. Let us be the ones who show up, who see, and who stay close enough to say the hard thing when it's needed.

May the people who come after us inherit a church that knows how to be real.

Amen.
