The 4 Questions: Ephesians 2:8-10 and What Salvation Actually Requires

Amazing family,
What a blessed Sunday! Our hearts were full as we celebrated a new baptism in our community this week. This week Sis. Lori-Patton Johnson asked us a question: “What does it mean to be saved? How do you get it? Who gets salvation? And how do you keep it?”
How many of us, if we’re honest, have spent years working for something God already handed to us.
Somebody offers us grace, we say it’s fine, and we call that humility. Let me break this to you: sometimes it’s not humility, it’s refusal dressed up nice.
Sis. Lori-Patton Johnson described this well. That thing we do when somebody compliments our outfit and we can’t just say thank you, we have to tell them where we got it from and how much it is, secretly lowering the value of the outfit and the compliment. We do that to God too. He hands us peace, a good word, a door that opens after it was shut for years, and we downplay it instead of receiving it.
This week we’re walking through salvation: what it actually is, how you get it, who gets it, and how you keep it. Let’s go through it together.

DAY 1 - Found By Grace
Ephesians 2:8-9 · NRSVUE
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Have you ever felt like you were too far gone, like the gap between who you are and who God wants you to be was simply too wide to cross? You are not alone in that feeling. But here is the truth that changes everything: salvation is not something you earn. It is something you receive.
Grace is God’s unearned favor, freely extended to every person who has ever fallen short, and every single one of us has. Romans 3:23 says we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. That is not a condemnation. It is an invitation, because where our shortcomings end, God’s grace begins.
Salvation means being delivered from the power and consequences of sin. It is not reserved for people who have it all together. It is offered to people who know they don’t. God saw your need before you even recognized it yourself, and He made a way through Jesus Christ.
You do not have to perform your way into God’s love. You simply have to receive it. We can mistake refusing a gift for humility, when really we are just struggling to believe we deserve it. But grace, by definition, is not about deserving. It is about God’s generous heart toward you.

Is there an area of your life where you have been trying to earn God’s love rather than simply receiving it as the gift it is?

Lord, thank You for a grace that I could never earn and do not deserve. Help me to open my hands and my heart to receive what You have so freely given. Amen.
DAY 2 - A Gift Worth Receiving

“Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
We live in a world that rewards effort. Work hard and earn your place, the thinking goes, and you’ll prove your worth. That mindset is not always wrong, but when we carry it into our relationship with God, it can rob us of the very thing He is trying to give us.
Salvation is a gift, and gifts are meant to be received, not negotiated or worked for. Yet so often we stand at the door of God’s grace with our hands in our pockets, unsure if we are really allowed to accept it. We dress up our hesitation as humility, but sometimes it is simply unbelief.
Confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in your heart that God raised Him from the dead is how you step into the salvation He has prepared. Not a checklist, not a performance. A confession and a belief. Faith is the open hand through which grace is received.
You do not have to have everything figured out before you come to God. You do not have to clean yourself up first. Salvation is the starting point, not the finish line. God meets you exactly where you are, patient and ready. The only question is whether you are willing to say yes.

What is one thing that has made it difficult for you to fully accept God’s gift of salvation or forgiveness without feeling like you need to earn it first?

Father, forgive me for the times I have made receiving Your grace more complicated than You intended it to be. Give me the simple, childlike faith to say yes to what You are offering. Amen.
DAY 3 - Known Before Birth

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
It can be easy to feel like a small dot in a very large world. With billions of people on this planet, the idea that God knows you personally and specifically can feel almost too good to be true. But it is true.
Before you were born, before your parents ever met, God knew you. He knew your name, your story, your struggles, and your potential. That is not a poetic idea. It is a promise, and it means your life is not an accident. You were placed here on purpose, by a God who has been thinking about you for longer than you can imagine.
Think about what that means. Out of every person who has ever lived, God knows you. He hears your prayers. He sees your tears. He notices when you wake up in the morning because He is the one who woke you up. That kind of personal, attentive love is not something you can manufacture. It is something you can only receive with gratitude.
You are not forgotten, and you are not overlooked. You are known, and you are loved by a God who does not lose track of His children. Who is salvation for? It is prepared for everyone, but will everyone make the choice to receive it?

How does knowing that God has been aware of you and thinking about you since before your birth change the way you see your own value and purpose?

God, thank You for knowing me fully and loving me completely. Help me to live today with the confidence that comes from being known and chosen by You. Amen.
DAY 4 - Created For More
Ephesians 2:10 · NRSVUE
“For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we may walk in them.”
Salvation is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of one. When God rescues us, He does not simply set us aside in a safe place. He sets us in motion toward a purpose that was prepared specifically for us.
You are God’s handiwork, and that word carries the image of a craftsman who works with intention and care. You were not mass-produced. You were made with thought and detail, and with a specific plan in mind, and that plan includes good works that only you can do, with the gifts and story that are uniquely yours.
No one else can do what you are called to do. Your testimony and your presence in the lives of the people around you, these things matter. God did not save you so you could stay comfortable. He saved you so you could step into something greater than yourself.
This does not mean you have to have it all figured out. It means taking the next step in front of you, trusting that God has already gone ahead to prepare the way. Walking in your purpose will sometimes feel uncomfortable, but that discomfort is often a sign that you are growing into exactly who God created you to be.

What is one good work or calling you sense God has placed in front of you that you have been hesitant to step into, and what is holding you back?

Lord, thank You for creating me with purpose and intention. Give me the courage to step into the good works You have prepared for me, trusting that You have already gone before me. Amen.
DAY 5 - God Goes Before You
Galatians 6:9-10 · NRSVUE
“So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all and especially for those of the family of faith.”
Living out your faith is not always easy. There will be days when the work feels thankless and progress is slow. But you are not walking this road alone, and the harvest you are working toward is real.
God does not call you to a purpose and then leave you to figure it out on your own. He goes before you. He prepares the way. He fills in the gaps where your skills and knowledge fall short. That is not a reason to be careless. It is a reason to be courageous. You can take the next step because the One who sees the whole path is already there.
Faith without action is incomplete. Believing in God’s promises means moving forward even when you cannot see the full picture. It means showing up and doing the work, trusting that your effort is not wasted. Galatians 6:9 reminds us that we will reap in due season if we do not give up. The season of harvest is coming. Do not quit before it arrives.
Your story and your willingness to keep going may be the very thing that helps someone else find their way. Stay the course. God is with you every step.

Where in your life do you feel most tempted to give up, and what would it look like to take one faithful step forward today instead?
Prayer
Father, on the days when I feel weary, remind me that You go before me and that my faithfulness is never wasted. Give me the strength to keep going and the trust to believe that the harvest is coming. Amen.
A Prayer for the Week Ahead
Lord,
This week we heard You answer the questions we’re often afraid to ask out loud: what salvation is, how you get it, who gets it, and how you keep it. Every answer led back to the same place. Grace was never a wage. It was never something we clocked in for. It was a gift, offered before we had anything to offer back.
So go from here carrying it, not proving it. Step into the good works You already prepared, even when the road ahead feels uncertain, trusting that You go before us and fill in what our own skill and knowledge cannot reach.
What we carry now is not a debt we owe You. It’s an inheritance You already signed over to us, and to our children after us, and to whoever is watching our lives to see if any of this is real. Amen.
