Finding Your People: Ruth 1:14-17 and What It Means to Go Deep for Somebody

5-Day Devotional · September 2026

Amazing family,

Who are you going to go deep for?

How many of us, if we're honest, have been running on contracts instead of covenant. "I'll show up as long as it works for me." "I'll give what I get back." We do it at work, until the layoff notice lands and "family" turns back into an employee number. We do it in relationships outside of church, and if we're not careful, we do it here too.

That is what a contract looks like. It holds only as long as it is working for somebody. A covenant does not ask what is in it for me. It says: I don't have anything to offer you, and I'm still going to stand here with you.

So this week the question is not whether you have found your people yet, but whether you are willing to be somebody's people first.

Over these next five days we're going to walk through what that looks like, in the small, specific ways Ruth lived it out before anybody ever heard the name Boaz. Let's start with Day 1.

WATCH THE FULL MESSAGE

DAY 1 - From Contract To Covenant

Ruth 1:14-17 · NRSVUE

"Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!"

Most of us have learned to keep score in relationships. We give a little, we expect a little back. When the balance tips too far, we pull away. It feels like self-protection, and honestly, sometimes it is. But there is a different way to live, and Scripture shows us what it looks like.

Ruth had every reason to walk away from Naomi. Her husband was gone. There was no inheritance, no promise, and no guarantee of anything better ahead. Orpah made the reasonable choice and left. But Ruth stayed. Not because she had something to gain, but because she had made a commitment that went deeper than circumstances.

This is the difference between a contract and a covenant. A contract says, I will show up as long as it works for me. A covenant says, I am with you. That kind of loyalty is rare. It is also exactly what God modeled for us through His Son, Jesus Christ, who stayed with us when we had nothing to offer Him in return.

We need to stop being on a contractual deal with everybody and start looking for our covenantal moments. — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

Is there a relationship in your life where you have been operating on a contract rather than a covenant, and what would it look like to change that?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for modeling covenant love through Jesus Christ. You stayed with us when we had nothing to offer You. Help me to move beyond what is comfortable and convenient, and give me the courage to commit to others the way You have committed to me. Amen.

DAY 2 - The Strength To Stay

Ruth 1:14-17 · NRSVUE

"Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!"

Starting something is exciting. Finishing something feels satisfying. But staying, especially when things get hard and the reward is nowhere in sight, that is where most of us struggle.

Ruth did not just make a beautiful promise to Naomi. She kept it. Day after day, she went out to glean in the fields, doing humble, exhausting work to provide for them both. There was no applause, no recognition, and no guarantee it would lead anywhere. She simply stayed faithful to the person she had committed to walk with.

This kind of quiet, consistent presence is one of the most powerful things one person can offer another. You do not always need the right words or a grand gesture. Sometimes just showing up, again and again, is the most meaningful thing you can do. God calls us to be people who stay, not because it is easy, but because it reflects His own faithfulness toward us.

Sometimes presence is the strongest thing. — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

Is there someone in your life right now who simply needs you to stay present with them, even if you have nothing to fix or say?

Prayer

Father, give me the endurance to stay when staying is hard. You do not walk away when I am difficult or depleted. Teach me to reflect that same faithfulness in the way I show up for the people around me. Amen.

DAY 3 - Somebody's Roof

Ruth 1:14-17 · NRSVUE

"Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!"

It is easy to spend our energy searching for community, looking for the people who will encourage us, support us, and make us feel like we belong. That longing is real and it is not wrong. But sometimes God flips the question on us in the most unexpected way.

Ruth was not searching for her place in Israel. She was focused on being a faithful presence for Naomi, not thinking about her own future or her own comfort. She was being someone else's covering, someone else's stability, in a season when Naomi had nothing left. By choosing to be that for Naomi, Ruth stepped directly into the path God had already prepared for her.

You may be waiting for your people to find you. But what if God is asking you to be the person someone else needs first? Each of us has the capacity to be a source of stability for someone who is struggling. That is not a burden. It is an invitation into something bigger than yourself.

Each of you under the sound of my voice is somebody's roof to their Naomi. — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

Who in your life right now might be looking for someone to be their covering, and are you willing to step into that role?

Prayer

God, open my eyes to the people around me who need a steady, faithful presence. Help me to stop waiting to be found and start being what someone else needs. Amen.

DAY 4 - Brave, Not Blind

Ruth 1:14-17 · NRSVUE

"Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!"

When we talk about covenant commitment, it is important to be honest about what it is and what it is not. Covenant does not mean staying in situations that are harmful or allowing yourself to be manipulated or mistreated. That is something else entirely.

Covenant means choosing to walk with someone, showing up with consistency, honesty, and genuine care, even when it costs you something. Ruth walked with Naomi into uncertainty. She did not have a map or a promise. She had a choice, and she made it with her eyes open.

That kind of brave, clear-eyed commitment is what the church is called to model. We are not a community built on what we can get from each other. We are built on the kind of love that says, I am with you, not because of what you can offer me, but because God has called me to walk alongside you. That is the love Jesus showed us. He did not keep score. He kept covenant.

Covenant does not mean you put yourself in manipulative, abusive situations. Covenant means I walk with you. — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

How do you personally distinguish between a covenant commitment that is healthy and one that has crossed into something harmful or one-sided?

Prayer

Lord, give me wisdom to love others with courage and clarity. Help me to walk faithfully with the people You have placed in my life, reflecting the brave and selfless love of Jesus, without confusing covenant with self-neglect. Amen.

DAY 5 - Faithfulness That Isn't Wasted

Ruth 1:14-17 · NRSVUE

"Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!"

Ruth had no idea what her faithfulness would produce. She was a Moabite woman in a foreign land, with no status, no connections, and no clear future. She simply kept walking with Naomi and kept doing the next right thing. And God wove her story into something extraordinary.

Because Ruth stayed, she met Boaz. Because she was faithful in the small, unglamorous work of gleaning, her character was noticed. Because she chose covenant over comfort, she became part of the lineage through which Jesus Christ came into the world. She did not plan any of that. She just stayed faithful.

You may be in a season where your quiet, consistent commitment to someone feels invisible. Keep going. You are not just helping them. You are walking in step with the God who keeps every promise, and He has a way of blessing those who reflect His heart toward others.

If you just be somebody's roof, it will help your own destiny. — Pastor Kaloma Smith

Reflection

Looking back on your own life, can you identify a moment when quiet faithfulness to someone else opened a door you never expected?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the reminder that faithfulness is never wasted in Your hands. Help me to trust You with the outcomes and simply focus on loving the people You have placed in front of me. Amen.

A Prayer for the Week Ahead

Lord,

This week revealed something in us. We have been living guarded, keeping score, waiting to be chosen before we choose anybody back. Forgive us for treating what You built as covenant like it was just another contract.

Send us out like Ruth. Willing to walk toward somebody with no promise attached and no guarantee of what it will cost us. Let us be the bread somebody needed, the presence somebody needed, the cheerleader somebody needed, this week and not just when it is convenient.

May the people who come after us inherit a church that knows how to be somebody's people first. Amen.
